Next New Work Destination > Tunisia

I love my job! And I count myself fortunate to be able to travel around while on official travel to Tunisia. I lived in Tunis City for 5 months in 2023.

March 2024

Honestly, I never thought Tunisia is this interesting... I came here to work on a project without pre-knowledge about the country. It all started in March of 2024 when I conducted a stakeholders' consultation workshop for a government project.

I learned that Tunisia is the favorite holiday destination for Europeans. No wonder that even in the ancient times, Romans extended its empire in the country as evidenced by ruins in Carthage, El Jem, and Dougga. Its history include Spanish Empire and then Ottoman Empire conquests.

While I was in the country for 6 months, I reached just the few of its wonderful UNESCO Heritage sites.

May 2024

Tunisia being so rich in tourism, I decided to go around to check  and |x|perience them myself while I was in town. Trivia: It has 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The closest to the capital city, Tunis, are the Carthage Ruins which are mostly of Punic and Roman architectures. Another interesting site is the blue & white houses in Sidi Bou Said which resembles the Santorini Greece.

In ancient history, Carthage in the north of Tunisia was a Punic settlement which was later conquered by the Romans and then by the Arabs. So the architectures built and left by these different empires now laid in ruins. In the south of the country, the preserved structures are of Berber origin, now the Star Wars filming locations.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Amphitheatre of El Jem (1979), Archaeological Site of Carthage (1979), Medina of Tunis (1979), Ichkeul National Park (1980), Punic Town of Kerkuane and its Necropolis (1985, 1986), Kairouan (1988), Medina of Sousse (1988), Dougga / Thugga (1997), and Djerba: an island territory (2023). My junket trips so far made me reached 5 of the heritage sites. If given the chance to come back, I will definitely visit the rest, most especially the Djerba Island, the Matmata Caves in Tatouine, and the Saharan Desert in the south.

Nov 2024

I had another special and wonderful |x|perience living in the country, in Tunis City. I was billeted at Hotel Sheraton for 3 months and provided a lavish loft apartment for 3 months.

And in November, I was heading home to the Philippines.
